Recent Outreach Activities/Events

Outreach:

The UW MRSEC is involved in outreach activities both on and off the UW-Madison campus. In addition to school visits and teacher workshops, the UW MRSEC introduces the general public to the wonders of materials science through partnerships with the following organizations:

Destination Discovery Exploration Field Trips
The Town Center at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery is an exceptional destination for scientific exploration. The UW MRSEC offers several field trip experiences through the Town Center for students in elementary, middle, and high school. For more information and to register for a field trip online, click here.
 Engineering Expo logo Engineering Expo
Engineering Expo is a three day event held every two years (next event: April 2015) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's College of Engineering. Expo is run entirely by students and brings over 10,000 visitors to campus biennially. The UW MRSEC presents multiple exploration stations at the event. More information on Expo can be found be clicking here.
An REU in lab Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Every summer, through generous funding provided by the National Science Foundation, the UW MRSEC hosts two REU programs. Participants spend 10 weeks conducting research in an area of engineering, physics, chemistry, science education, or public policy. For more information, click here.
ICE logo  Institute for Chemical Education (ICE)
ICE is a national center for science educators to develop and disseminate ideas through the creation of kits and publications. Since its founding in 1983, ICE has led the drive to help teachers revitalize science in schools throughout the United States. The UW MRSEC partners with ICE to create and disseminate materials science kits for K-12 classrooms and museums. More information can be found be clicking here.
EYH logo Expanding Your Horizons (EYH)
EYH is a one-day conference held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for around 400 middle school aged (6-8th grade) girls from south-central Wisconsin to learn about the wide range of career options for women in science, technology, engineering, and math. The UW MRSEC Education Group volunteers to coordinate the event and introduce girls to materials science research at the University. More information can be found here.
WSST logo Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers (WSST)
The Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers was founded in 1958. Today it is the largest Wisconsin organization of individuals interested in the advancement of science education. An WSST conference is held annually, and staff or affiliated members of the UW MRSEC Education Group will speak and present newly developed materials. For more information, click here.
NSTA logo National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)
The NSTA, founded in 1944, is the largest organization in the world committed to promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all. The UW MRSEC Education Group presents at the annual National Conference. More information here.
MRS Logo Materials Research Society (MRS)
MRS is an organization of materials researchers from academia, industry and government that promotes communication for the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research to improve the quality of life. The UW MRSEC Education Group presents at society meetings. More information can be found here.
secme logo SECME: Diversity in STEM Education
SECME was established in 1975 to increase the pool of historically underrepresented and under-served students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); thus creating a diverse and globally competitive workforce. The UW MRSEC participates in the annual SECME Summer Institute. Click here for more information.
 Science Olympiad logo Science Olympiad
For the past 30 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. Science Olympiad provides rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 7000 teams in 50 states. The UW MRSEC Education Group will collaborate with members of the MRSEC to lead the Materials Science event, found here
