Watch displays contain liquid crystals to display time. This is because liquid crystals require very low amounts of energy to manipulate. In this activity students will disassemble LCD watches and explore their inner workings. Also, some of the properties of the liquid crystals contained within the watch will be analyzed.

Materials
- An inexpensive LCD watch; it only needs to work if you want them to reassemble it into a working watch.
- Small screwdriver
- 9-Volt battery and battery snap
- Tongs and hot water
- Thermometer
- Multimeter for checking battery voltage
